![]() Cities to Explore Creating Urban School Meals InstituteThe nation’s attention is focused on childhood nutrition more today than ever before, and school meals occupy center stage. Despite this attention, schools still struggle with few resources to feed kids well. The meetings this spring will explore the potential for a network to support reform in urban school districts across the country. Toni Liquori has been leading recent school food reform efforts in New York City and drawing lessons from successful school food reforms in Rome. She said the size and scale involved in feeding children in large city schools is a distinguishing feature of the project. "My earlier work with the NYC school meals program helped me to see
'scale' in the large urban areas as both a challenge and opportunity
when trying to strengthen procurement practice in the context of
children's health and our regional food systems," Liquori said. The W.K. Kellogg Foundation will sponsor the meetings in coordination with the School Nutrition Association and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a partnership of the William J. Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association. Food Service companies participating in the Food Lab are among the other stakeholders being invited. May 8-10, 2007 and June 19-21, 2007.
